Pros and cons of our propagation wall
I have been wanting to write this blog post for a while now! This propagation wall is a huge conversation piece in our house and even when it is in the background of my stories people will ask about it! After having blank walls for like the first two years of living in our house I decided it was time to get creative and I came up with this propagation wall, I love having plants and this was a cool way to add color to our walls! I wanted to make a pros/cons list because there are a couple of things that should be mentioned if you are going to add this propagation wall to your home as decoration! I will stop rambling but here are some pros and cons to having this propagation feature wall in our house!
Pros of Propagation Wall
Good way to decorate without using wall art - I am not a HUGE fan of art, I have warmed up to it more recently but we have really tall ceilings which leaves a lot of blank white walls. I like some art but more intentional curated art that I find at estate sales or thrifting rather than finding a print at HomeGoods or something. Also, not knocking that because there are definitely some of those pieces in my house just not the main source… ANYWAYS.
Planting new plants once they get too big - As I mentioned before I like having plants in the house and don’t get me wrong. I still go to Lowe’s and get new plants, but it is fun to put a clipping into the propagation vase and then a couple of months later have a big enough plant that can go into its own pot! I also will get mystery bundles of plant clippings from Etsy and it is a really fun way to get new kinds of plants and add a larger variety of plants to our house.
Cost-effective! It filled a large space for a small amount of money! I got the vases and rocks on Amazon! The vases come in a pack of three with their appropriate wall hanging hooks for $22.98 and the rocks were $9.99 for a 5-pound bag. In hindsight, I probably would go to Lowes or something and get a larger bag of rocks for less money but I apparently wasn’t thinking haha. I got 4 bags of rocks ($40) and 6 of the 3 packs of vases ($138) which was a total of $178 for the rocks and vases!
Unique Decor - This wasn’t something I initially thought was a good thing but it really is a unique feature wall to have in a house and literally every single person that has come into our house has complemented the wall and said how much they love it! It is a fun conversation piece and I have actually given some of the plants that I have propagated to people who are visiting to add to their own plant collections!
A mess-free way to keep plants in the house - I probably sound like a broken record, but I really do love keeping plants in the house and I will still keep them in the house even though there’s dirt and all of that jazz that comes along with having plants. But if you are looking for a dirt-free/mess-free way to have plants in the house, this is a really good option!
Cons of Propagation Wall
Have to deep clean about every 6 weeks so there is upkeep with them being clear!
Although there is the factor of having to clean the vases about every six weeks, I have come up with the perfect concoction to clean them without having to scrub the crap out of them. I took out all the rocks and put them in a colander to rinse them really well and said that to the side. Then I put all of the vases into the sink and sprinkle baking soda in each one and then a little bit of vinegar into each vase. After that, I fill my large kitchen sink with water up to the top of the vases and then I let them soak for a minimum of five hours, but sometimes I will leave them overnight. The longer they are soaking in this concoction the better! Then when enough time has passed and you’re ready to empty them, I drain the water pour all of the vases out, and then rinse them with water. I have a scrub brush, but a toothbrush works just the same and I use that to get any spots that are left over, but with this vinegar and baking soda method, I don’t have to do that as often! Then I rinse them with water and let them dry on a dry mat until it’s time to put the rocks back in and fill them with water!
Replacing vases - We’ve had to replace a few (actually only 2) from breaking while we were cleaning them. I think it has something to do with the hot water making the thin glass fragile and then add in the motion of scrubbing, it has popped out a corner of the vase. Luckily we have only ever had to buy one replacement pack in the three years that we have had the feature wall.
Going into writing this post I was going to try to do an even number of pros and cons for the propagation feature wall but honestly, I could only come up with two cons and probably could have gone on and on about the pros of having this wall in our house!
