Embrace the Essence of August: Fresh Home Decor Ideas for EARLY FALL

August always feels like a jumbled mess of summer and fall which in my mind means that it’s the perfect time to refresh your home decor and transition seamlessly into the upcoming fall season. This is the month where you can blend the decor of summer with the early hints of autumn. I have rounded up some stylish but still practical decor ideas to help you embrace the essence of August in your home. These are also ideas where you don’t feel like you have to switch everything out, you can just add and take away bits here and there for a smooth transition!

1. Incorporate Natural Elements

As we transition towards fall, blending natural elements into your decor can create a seamless shift in seasons. Consider adding florals that have more of a fall vibes like pompous grass, dried florals or other dried foliage. On a table you can use these dried flowers and grasses in arrangements in subtle pops. You can also incorporate natural textures with wicker baskets, wooden accents, or stone decor pieces to bring a touch of the outdoors inside.

2. Update Your Outdoor Space

August is a great time to make the most of your outdoor areas before the cooler weather sets in. Living here in Florida means that we are entering into a season when we spend most of our time outside on the patio. This is also the time of year where stores are marking down summer and putting fall onto the floor. This is a great time to enhance your patio or garden space with more neutral outdoor cushions, lanterns, and cozy throws or pillows. If you are anything like me and you have an abundance of plants, you can update those to more fall styles or leave as is depending on where you’re located. For us in Florida, I leave my plants the same throughout the year because they don’t die from colder temps. But in northern spots, this is the perfect time to swap out those potted plants for something more durable. I really love this Egg chair from Target!

3. Lighten Up with Breezy Fabrics

With anticipation of temperatures dropping outside, this is the time to start swapping out the throw blankets that you have around the house. Over the summer you might have had more light and airy fabrics in your home. Things like linen, cotton, and light-weight throw blankets, but moving into fall you might want to cozy things up with textured knits or chenille. This can also be where you add in those colors that we mentioned earlier.

4. Play with Seasonal Scents

Enhance the ambiance of your home with seasonal scents that capture the essence of early fall. Light candles or use essential oil diffusers with fragrances like citrus, vanilla, or cinnamon. These scents make for a cozy but light and refreshing space. Leave the scents like pumpkin or spiced cakes for later on in the season closer to Halloween.

5. Prepare for Autumn with Transitional Decor

While enjoying the last days of summer, you can also start preparing your home for fall. Introduce warm tones like burnt orange, deep reds, and soft browns in small doses. Consider swapping out a few summer accessories for autumn-themed pieces, like throw pillows with cozy textures or a knit throw blanket.

6. Focus on Outdoor Activities and Entertainment

August is a fantastic time for outdoor gatherings. You’ve already updated your outdoor spaces and now it is time to incorporate the neutral tones when it comes to outdoor dinnerware. Set up an inviting space where you and your guests can get relax in a cozy outdoor space! Think a space with warmly lit string lights and comfy seating. These additions will make your outdoor spaces inviting and ready for that transition into cooler nights.

I love the months August through December the most. It is my favorite time of year to entertain and host people in our home. These tips let you enjoy the remaining summer days while gently transitioning into the cozy fall season. Please let me know if you have any questions at all! I would be more than happy to answer those for you in the comments below or you can always email me at hello@emmatarynjones.com and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Happy decorating!

Much Love,
